Treatment pathway
ADHD medication in Ireland: assessment is not a prescription
Published by Divergent.ie
Reviewed 30 August 2026. See how sources are selected or submit a correction.
Medication may be one treatment option after an individual medical review. An ADHD assessment or psychologist's report does not by itself guarantee a prescription, a particular medicine or ongoing shared care.
Who makes the decision
An appropriately authorised medical prescriber must consider the diagnosis, health history, other medicines, risks, possible benefits and monitoring needs. The decision is individual and may require additional information or examination.
Questions to ask the assessment provider
- Does this pathway include a medical assessment or only psychological assessment?
- Who would prescribe and monitor treatment if clinically appropriate?
- What follow-up fees and checks may apply?
- What happens if your GP or another service does not accept shared care?
- How are urgent side effects or supply problems handled?
Do not start, stop or change prescribed medication based on this website. Contact the prescribing clinician or pharmacist for personal advice, and use urgent services when needed.
